More sustainable shipping: ATM reflects on a successful year with additional degassing facility and new jetty

02 October 2025

One year after commissioning its third degassing facility and a new jetty, ATM, part of waste-to-product company Renewi, looks back on a successful period. Since August 2024, the jetty has been upgraded and the degassing processing capacity doubled, enabling significantly more ships to be serviced safely and sustainably. The combined investment has led to a clear increase in capacity, safety, and environmental benefits.

The expansion of the degassing facility anticipates stricter legislation introduced in July 2024, which prohibits onboard degassing of substances such as petrol and other flammable liquids.

Results in numbers

  • Harmful gases removed from 639 ships (+192% compared to 2023)
  • Processing time per ship improved by 90%

Environmental gains through integrated approach

The degassing facility is fully integrated into ATM’s existing processing operations. Residual gases are responsibly discharged via an afterburner, without the use of fossil fuels. In addition to degassing, the company also offers services such as wastewater treatment and ship cleaning.

Smart infrastructure for sustainable growth

Alongside the additional degassing capability, a new jetty has been constructed. The 100-metre-long jetty was designed with efficiency, safety, and sustainability in mind. Equipped with six electrically powered loading arms and an ergonomic “lazy ladder”, staff can work more safely and efficiently. The jetty directly contributes to increased capacity and strengthens ATM’s position within the sector.

Piter Brandenburg, Commercial Director at ATM: Thanks to the expansion, we’ve been able to serve our customers more quickly while also increasing environmental gains. In 2026, we will continue to develop solutions that not only meet legal requirements but also contribute to a cleaner future for the shipping industry.
