On the road to circular construction: Renewi takes next step in Nieuwegein

30 September 2025

Waste-to-product company Renewi is investing in an upgrade of its existing sorting line for construction and demolition waste in Nieuwegein. Thanks to new technologies, including a drum screen and an eddy current separator, the site will be able to recycle approximately 2,500 tons more materials each year. This investment underscores how Renewi is actively shaping and accelerating the circular economy in the Netherlands.

Construction sector crucial in circular transition

The Dutch government aims to be fully circular by 2050. By 2030, the use of primary raw materials must already be reduced by 50 percent. Since the construction sector accounts for no less than half of national raw material consumption, investing in innovative solutions and smarter recycling processes is essential to achieving these circular goals.

Higher recycling rates

The installation, consisting of a drum screen, a magnet and an eddy current separator (which removes non-ferrous metals from the waste), makes it possible to recover even more valuable materials such as screened sand, rubble, and metals. As a result, residual waste streams are significantly reduced and the recycling rate at the Nieuwegein site increases.

“Every improvement in our recycling rate counts: for Renewi, for our customers, and for society as a whole. This investment in Nieuwegein, a strategically important site for Renewi in the Netherlands, is a concrete example of how we are working to accelerate the transition to a circular economy,” says Dieter Avonds, Director Processing at Renewi.
