Renewi increases capacity for producing green energy from organic waste
15 January 2026

Waste-to-product company Renewi is investing in a new cooling installation at its site on Corsicaweg in Amsterdam. As a result, the location will be better equipped to process the growing volume of organic waste, leading to an average annual increase of 3% in the recycling rate. The investment aligns with the green gas blending obligation that takes effect on 1 January 2027, which increases demand for renewable gases and directly contributes to the energy transition in the Netherlands.
7,500 households supplied with green energy… and more to come
The Renewi site in Amsterdam processes around 100 kilotons of food scraps and other organic residual streams each year. Through an innovative digestion process, 19 million cubic meters of biogas is produced annually, of which 11 million cubic meters is used to produce green gas that is fed directly into the natural gas grid. This is enough to cover the annual consumption of approximately 7,500 households. The remaining 8 million cubic meters of biogas is upgraded in collaboration with partner Nordsol into bio-LNG for Shell.
Ready for the future
The digestion process releases a significant amount of water, which in the treatment process generates considerable heat. Optimal cooling is therefore essential to ensure the efficiency and stability of the entire installation. Thanks to the new cooling system, Renewi can continue operating at full capacity even during hot summers. This increases the recycling rate by 3%.
“This cooling installation helps us boost our biogas production and deliver more green energy to our customers. It enables us to proactively respond to the blending obligation from 2027 and helps accelerate the energy transition. Every kiloton of organic waste that we convert into renewable energy brings us one step closer to a greener economy,” says Marco Kalverda, Manager Organics at Renewi.
