ATM becomes Renewi Industrial Waste & Materials Moerdijk
27 October 2026

As of 1 October, ATM (Afvalstoffen Terminal Moerdijk) continues under the name Renewi Industrial Waste & Materials Moerdijk. The plant has been part of Renewi for many years. The new name brings Moerdijk’s specialist knowledge and expertise more prominently under the Renewi brand, from the safe treatment of complex industrial waste streams to the recovery of valuable raw materials.
Over 40 years of contributing to society
Since 1982, the plant has played an important role in society by processing and treating complex industrial waste streams. Safety, environmental responsibility and technological development have always been at the heart of its operations. That role remains just as relevant today. In recent years, the site has increasingly focused on recovering valuable materials from these waste streams. By making them suitable for reuse, for example as circular construction materials for concrete, Moerdijk helps reduce the use of virgin raw materials and supports the transition towards a more sustainable concrete industry.
Unique production processes working together
What makes the Moerdijk plant unique is the way its various installations and processes work together. Residual streams from one process are used in another. For example, oil and sludge fractions recovered from wastewater can be used as fuel for other processes at the site. Pyrolysis, sludge treatment and water treatment are also part of this integrated system. The thermal treatment of soil and tar-containing asphalt granulate also enables materials such as sand, gravel and filler to be recovered. These circular raw materials find their way into the concrete industry, where they can replace virgin raw materials.
When innovation moves faster than the regulatory framework
The innovative nature of this synergistic process also brings challenges. While the process enables the development of circular construction materials, legislation, regulations and the associated certification procedures can delay their application in the concrete industry.
Piter Brandenburg, Director Renewi Industrial Waste & Materials: “From a technical perspective, we are able to recover more and more value from complex waste streams. The next challenge is to ensure that these circular construction materials can also find their way to the market more quickly. End-of-waste status and product certification are essential to safeguard quality and safety, but these procedures are often complex and time-consuming. If we want to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable concrete industry, innovation, regulation and certification need to move forward in closer alignment.”
