Main Orgaworld generator has supplied 90,000 people with green electricity for a year

Measured up to last week, the main generator at the Orgaworld Greenmills site in Amsterdam had produced over 120 million kWh, enough to supply green electricity to around 90,000 people for a year. The generator, which is used to convert organic residual flows into green electricity, heat and steam, came back on line last week after a major, week-long service and overhaul. It is now ready to carry on supplying thousands of people with green energy.

The Orgaworld Greenmills installation in Amsterdam generates 5,560 kWh per hour, which corresponds to an annual consumption of 1-1.5 households (almost 11,000 households on an annual basis). Since it was installed in 2010, the generator has produced around 120 million kWh, the equivalent of a year’s supply of green electricity for 90,000 people. “At the installation in Amsterdam we process in the region of 120,000 tonnes of organic residual flows from the food and retail industries every year”, explains Klaas van den Berg, director of Orgaworld. “These waste flows ultimately undergo digestion in large tanks at this Amsterdam site, a process that releases a biogas. Thanks to this generator, we are able to use the biogas for processes within Greenmills itself, as well as making large volumes available for the electricity grid. No raw materials are lost during our process. The material left over is offered to the agriculture sector as a high-quality fertiliser, for example.”

Orgaworld is the only company in the sector that handles all aspects of organic waste processing. ”We develop, build and operate the sites and installations ourselves, which means we can constantly improve the processes and optimise the reuse of residual flows”, Van den Berg continues. “At the Greenmills factory we combine so-called wet digestion technology with biogas conversion (for electricity and heat) and water purification (with the help of a biomembrane reactor). This creates the potential for smart synergies with the district heating network, the regional electricity grid and also companies in the surrounding area – nearby firms supply the waste flows to us through pipelines, for example, allowing us to optimise the processing and reuse of this waste at our site.”

About Orgaworld
Orgaworld is part of Renewi and one of the leading players in the Netherlands in the processing of organic residual flows originating from local authorities and businesses. At our five sites in the Netherlands we focus primarily on composting, anaerobic digestion and waste-water purification technology, efficiently converting the residual flows into green electricity, sustainable heat and soil improvers. At our innovation centre in Lelystad we also develop the technologies of tomorrow that will make it possible to create valuable products from organic waste.
