Renewi invests in new sustainable collection fleet

International waste-to-product company, Renewi plc, will make a large investment in sustainable and more efficient trucks which will significantly reduce the environmental impact of the company’s collection fleet.

Euro 6 trucks are ‘best-in-class’ for reducing harmful exhaust pollutants and emissions. Renewi will invest in over 400 Euro 6 trucks across the Netherlands and Belgium, meaning that by Spring 2019 around 90% of its fleet will be Euro 5 or Euro 6 trucks. These more sustainable trucks will result in a significant improvement in Renewi’s own environmental footprint.

In addition to improving its environmental credentials, the investment will also reduce Renewi’s operating costs while improving customer service and safety. The investment will reduce the average age of Renewi’s collection fleet by almost two years, resulting in less fuel and maintenance costs. The new trucks are combined with the latest safety equipment to protect the public and on board computing to offer our customers excellent service.

The upgraded fleet also prepares Renewi for impending low emissions regulation in city centres. Low emissions zones are already in place in some cities in the Netherlands where Euro 4 or lower trucks are not permitted anymore and in Belgium where Euro 3 or lower trucks are banned from city centres. In the Netherlands, the ‘National Green Deal Zero Emission City Logistics’ which aims for zero emissions in cities will come into force from 2025 and Renewi is putting in place its own strategy to comply.

Renewi is constantly optimising collection routes to minimise emissions and reduce the cost per lift. The company will continue to test new engine technology to understand the scale of the benefit these vehicles can bring. Renewi has already invested in some electric trucks with four new electric collection vehicles due to come into operation in the Netherlands and three electric cranes, making a further positive impact on the company’s CO2 emissions.

Peter Dilnot, CEO at Renewi said:
“Sustainability is one of our core values as it underpins everything we do. We are therefore pleased to make a significant investment to modernise our fleet which will lower the impact that our operations have on the environment and improve the efficiency of our customer collections. Around 90% of the waste we treat is given a second life as new raw materials or energy and this alone saves a significant amount of CO2. We are now extending our positive impact by operating our collection and recycling activities as sustainably as possible.”
