Concrete doesn’t have to be knit-tight with pollution.

SQAPE, a joint venture between Cementbouw and Renewi Mineralz, developed the first “cementless concrete” that uses a geopolymer binder.

This binder is 100% made of secondary mineral residues, ensuring a reduction between 50% and 70% of carbon emissions compared to regular concrete. These products meet the applicable standards and own a KIWA innovation certificate, making them bonafide and readily applicable circular products. All the more as they can be crushed at their end-of-life phase and used as granulate in new geopolymer products or in regular concrete.

SQAPE helped create paving materials with this concrete and, notably, the first bicycle bridge built with cementless concrete in the Netherlands. These products show that SQAPE Technology is set to be soon extended to the building and infrastructure industry.

But SQAPE isn’t done yet, as they also developed a cementless mortar, named RaMaC, with similar properties and better performance for acid resistance and shrinkage compared to regular concrete. SQAPE plans to roll out its products in Belgium by 2022, as well as in Germany in the near future.
